With over 6,540 people per square kilometer, Hong Kong definitely has the highest concentrations of all types of people: we’ve got your share of fashion models and millionaires in Central, seemingly trillions of grannies and grandpas, as well as more than enough crazy people for everyone.
Today’s episode of crazy person encounter happened on the bus on my way to work. The upper deck of the bus was probably at 40 per cent capacity, when an angry-looking middle-aged man clambered on board. He shot each of us vindictive glares as he made his way down the aisle, and stopped to talk to each of us - beginning with the man in front of me. He finally arrived in front of my seat, crouched down, palm outstretched: “Give me a five-dollar cookie!” (a five dollar coin) he demanded. I was like sorry dude. Angry bus guy didn’t take that so well and gave me the dirtiest look of self entitled fury. He then walked up to each of the other passengers tapping their shoulders and demanding his fiver cookie. Finally, a girl at the front gave one to him, he angrily swiped it out of her hand and stomped downstairs.
All crazy intimidation and anger aside, angry bus man actually seemed normal. Which begs the question - what was he going to use the money for? Maybe he was a communist who believed that we should share the wealth.
What also makes me curious is the fact that no one did anything besides ignore him. Did they think he was just another crazy person, did they just pity him?
So many questions HK.
