MTR Anouncers

Hong Kongers, have you ever noticed that the loudest, most obnoxious cellphone conversationalists on the mtr ironically seem to wear the most girly, frilly pink clothes? These ladies usually have a reddish perm, are middle-aged and have the most blinged out accessories. When you run into these types, it’s time to pull out the trusty iPod and headphones.

Angry Bus Guy

With over 6,540 people per square kilometer, Hong Kong definitely has the highest concentrations of all types of people: we’ve got your share of fashion models and millionaires in Central, seemingly trillions of grannies and grandpas, as well as more than enough crazy people for everyone.

Today’s episode of crazy person encounter happened on the bus on my way to work. The upper deck of the bus was probably at 40 per cent capacity, when an angry-looking middle-aged man clambered on board. He shot each of us vindictive glares as he made his way down the aisle, and stopped to talk to each of us - beginning with the man in front of me. He finally arrived in front of my seat, crouched down, palm outstretched: “Give me a five-dollar cookie!” (a five dollar coin) he demanded. I was like sorry dude. Angry bus guy didn’t take that so well and gave me the dirtiest look of self entitled fury. He then walked up to each of the other passengers tapping their shoulders and demanding his fiver cookie. Finally, a girl at the front gave one to him, he angrily swiped it out of her hand and stomped downstairs.

All crazy intimidation and anger aside, angry bus man actually seemed normal. Which begs the question - what was he going to use the money for? Maybe he was a communist who believed that we should share the wealth.

What also makes me curious is the fact that no one did anything besides ignore him. Did they think he was just another crazy person, did they just pity him?

So many questions HK.

I Won’t Let You Lie To Yourself, by Corinne Bailey Rae

vintage looks

It is so hard to resist shopping in HK. Even on a lunch break, you can find something cool and precious looking.

On my way back to the office from a meeting today, I stopped by Accessorize - the UK-based jewellery and accessories shop. I’m not always big on their items, as the materials tend to break down after a few months wear. For example, my gibson girl style necklace became quite brassy after just a few months wear, but that might also have something to do with the high level of humidity in this city. Nonetheless, their items may be flimsy, but they definitely have the style down.

I picked up this vintage style quartz necklace that features a faux gold basket-weave chain for 56 hkd. The size of the quartz pendant practically straddles the line between gaudy and simple. When it comes to style, I’m not much for edgy, modern looks; but I do like to showcase some subtle contradictions. This necklace is right on target!

in HK, you can find some amazing bargains. I got this dress at a boutique in Kowloon this weekend for under $40 USD. I wore it straight to the office on Monday, paired off with my vintage gold casio, HnM gold bracelet and zombie lustre skin in the office of course! View high resolution

about me (updated)

I’m Chinese Canadian and moved back to Hong Kong about two years ago to eke out a living. Since I was 19, I’ve been working in media — writing, editing, shooting and filming, basically journalling away about life.

I sometimes get paid to do this, but I actually enjoy it a lot more when I can choose my own topics and write about them in a casual voice.

This blog is about clothes, accessories, lifestyle choices, quaint musings, extroverted introverts, the inner demand and everything else that we feel and cannot put a name to. Sans categorisation.

So come hang out with me on my real-life/online and sometimes metaphorical journey <3

xx

…And we’re back.
There’s been a lack of updates over the past few months due to the busy-ness of my 9-5 life. But these days, we are back up and running.
It’s a beautiful day outside. Enjoy, HK <3
